Someone Finally Said It
(And it's long over-due.)
Proud To Be White
Someone finally said it
How many are actually paying attention to this?
There are African Americans,
Mexican Americans,
Asian Americans,
Arab Americans,
Native Americans, etc.
...And then there are just -
Americans.
You pass me on the street
and sneer in my direction.
You Call me "White boy,"
"Cracker," "Honkey,"
"Whitey," "Caveman,"
... And that's OK.
But when I call you Nigger,
Kike, Towel head,
Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey,
Beaner, Gook, or Chink
... You call me a racist.
You say that whites commit a lot
of violence against you,
so why are the ghettos the most
dangerous places to live?
You have the United Negro College Fund.
You have Martin Luther King Day.
You have Black History Month.
You have Cesar Chavez Day.
You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.
You Have Yom Hashoah.
You have the NAACP.
And you have BET.
If we had WET
(White Entertainment Television)
... We'd be racists.
If we had a White Pride Day
... You would call us racists.
If we had White History Month
... We'd be racists.
If we had any organization for only whites
to "advance" OUR lives
... We'd be racists.
We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,
a Black Chamber of Commerce,
and then we just have the plain
Chamber of Commerce.
Wonder who pays for that?
If we had a college fund that only gave
white students scholarships
... You know we'd be racists.
There are over 60 openly-proclaimed
Black-only Colleges in the US ,
yet if there were "White-only Colleges"
... THAT would be a racist college.
In the Million Man March,
you believed that you were
marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights,
... You would call us racists.
You are proud to be black,
brown, yellow and orange,
and you're not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride
... You call us racists.
You rob us,
carjack us,
and shoot at us.
But, when a white police officer
shoots a black gang member
or beats up a black drug-dealer
who is running from the LAW and
posing a threat to ALL of society
... You call him a racist.
I am proud.
... But, you call me a racist.
Why is it that only
whites
can be racists?
There is nothing improper about this e-mail.
Let's see which of you are proud enough to send it on.

This is a word for word copy of an email I received today. Tell me in the comments just what you think about it. :D Go ahead, give me your opinions!

Before I go off, let me first say that I know, Lav, that you are simply asking for an opinion and not promoting this as your views. As such, please understand this is not directed at you personally.
That said...

This disgusts me! I have also received something similar and I find it to be a vitrilolic piece of racist propaganda.
I find the term "reverse racism" to be racist itself, since racism has no foundation in the race of the person spewing it.
There is a reason that the term "minority" is still in use today and that is because white people in the US still greatly outnumber any other single group. We are all united under the umbrella term "Americans", but the divisions along color lines are vast.
Until the day when color is disregarded in history classes and it is acknowledged that we ALL (save a handful of American Indians) came from other places and, therefore, none of us have greater claim to our homeland, the divisions will continue to exist.
What makes this especially racist is the sweeping bigotry of ghettos being predominately black and therefore dangerous, rather than factoring in economic status, which is actually a more compelling factor here.
"White pride" is almost always (as in the case of this email) coupled with a supposition that being white somehow makes us better than others. The statement that assumes that racism is only valid when spewed by whites is equally racist, regardless of who thinks it.
Why is it that couples don't take exception to singles groups? Why is it that children's programming is fine and dandy, but "adult programming" always means porn? It must be agist!
Forget that! This is a hate-filled diatribe that starts with the assumption that taking pride in one's heritage puts down everyone outside of that group and proceeds to do the exact same thing.
There is something WRONG with the person presenting this viewpoint. "If it's ok for you to do it, then it's ok for me" is a thought process that far too many people buy into and it's exactly the line of thinking that causes abuse to be perpetuated.
My son told me that he didn't like walking around our neighborhood because people sneered at him and looked at him glaringly. I told him to stop scowling at people and they would be more receptive to him. Guess what? It worked!
The reason that equality is SO HARD to achieve is that people (of all colors) are constantly trying to make themselves into victims and bemoan the fact that they are being held back by some other outside group.
I am neither proud nor ashamed to be white. It's the color of my skin and otherwise does not define me. I am a mother, a musician, a child, a friend, an IT girl, a philosopher, well-read, multi-faceted. Only that I am a woman is something that partially defines me that is out of my direct control.
I am not defined by skin color and no one else should be either.

Sorry. You asked.
I guess we're Euro-Americans. Why do we lump all African-Americans into one category? Aren't they Kenyan-Americans and Nigerian-Americans, etc.? We're the majority. In a democracy, the majority must take special care to tend to the interests of the minority groups.
fyregoddess: Don't be sorry! This is what I wanted! Thanks for responding. I DID NOT forward the email to anyone, but thought rather, that it would make a great, controversial blog post! It does bother me that its ok to call white people derogatory names. I don't think its ok for anyone to act that way. I agree that the "if you do it, then I can do it" attitude SUCKS.
Nvisiblewmn: I still want to know what people of other races are called when they live in other countries. Is a black English woman just and English woman? Or an African English woman? Yes, I am a Euro American! lol. Not white, not Caucasian, but Euro, lmao.
I loathe all the politically correct BS and mostly refuse to abide by it. I've known too many black people who got offended by the term "African American" because they had either never been to Africa and had no intention of going or because their ancestors had most recently come from the Carribean or from Brazil.
Most of the people who live in the US are mutts anyway. I don't understand any of the insistence of people whose families have been here for ages calling themselves German-Americans or Polish-Americans. Shoot, I'm an Irish-Dutch-German-French-Canadian-American or something like that. Sure, I may identify with one of those nationalities more than the others, but it doesn't lessen the role of those others in my physical makeup.
For me, outside of describing what someone looks like, color has no bearing. I find that more and more often when it comes to black or white, I'm trying to describe the shade of their skin in relation to what they look like rather than using either of those colors as a sweeping categorization.
Although, it's interesting to me that NO ONE ever describes Asians or Hispanics as "yellow". I guess that's just too offensive these days, and if you say Asian or Hispanic, people generally already have a features template in mind, eh?
nvisiblewmn, I can answer that. Part of the reason is that because of the slave trade in the US (and elsewhere), a lot of roots were lost. Not all or even most blacks are able to trace their heritage back to a specific country.
A lack of written records had a lot to do with it, but also the assimilation of black slaves into Christian (yes, specifically) society, which forced them to take on Americanized (read: whitewashed) names caused a lot of what one could use to trace the family tree to be lost forever.
I agree with most of this post. I feel that Whites have been discriminated against...and this coming from a Hispanic guy. The only thing I disagree with this post is that it doesn't stop the hate. I have read this before. It has been sent to me in E-mail form. I just feel that it makes a point but does not stop the hate.
Flyinfox_SATX
All I can say is is that respect goes both ways.
Just sometimes you get tired of all the discrimination going on either way.
Yes, Fyregoddess, I was being a little ineffectively sarcastic. It's the idea of lumping such diverse people together. You yourself noted that many of the so-called African Americans are from the Caribbean and don't like being designated one thing or another.
When will we do away with color and race and ethnic descriptions completely?
Fyregoddess said everything I would have said, only more eloquently!
The concept of "Black Pride" came about in the 1960s during the Civil Rights movement. Black people were shamed, by white people, to think of themselves as "less than." And that was literal - they were counted as 3/5ths of a whole person! How could you be proud of yourself if you didn't even count as a whole human being? So, a big change of mindset had to happen, and it was called "Black Pride."
To say that White Pride is even remotely similar to Black Pride is ludicrous! White people were never taught to think of themselves as lesser beings! "White Pride" is simply a euphemism for racism, that's all. White people were never owned as slaves, were never counted as 3/5ths of a human being, never went through the tremendous struggle that Black people had to endure, and therefore have NOT EARNED THE RIGHT to claim such a thing as White Pride, when there was never such a thing as White Shame to begin with!
Yeah, I got that email, too, once. It's shameful, disgraceful.
One day, sooner rather than later, I hope, we'll all come together as Americans.
Thanks for posting this, dear one.
Lately, I've been categorizing peeps in just two areas:
Asshole Americans and Americans.
Then there are those, no matter their color, religion or race - that just fall in between. Like me. =O)
What Margret said...I agree 100%.
